National Champion Red Dawg Wheelchair Basketball Team Treats Warrior Fans to Sat. Exhibition
Dawgs Take On Staff/Students During WHS/GICC Halftime
A national championship basketball team will grace the WHS court this Saturday, Feb. 2.
The Red Dawgs Wheelchair Basketball Team, National Champions for both 2011 and 2012, will treat Warrior fans to an exhibition.
The Nebraska Red Dawgs Jr. Wheelchair Basketball Team consists of 24 physically disabled children ages 7-18 from Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota, who because of birth defects, serious injuries and diseases, use wheelchairs to compete. The team practices in Omaha every Saturday from September through April. The players come from up to three hours away to form a team in Omaha, and therefore, have to travel to find teams to compete against.
The Varsity team consists of players who are between the ages of 13 and 18. This national championship team includes Wahoo’s very own K.J. Russ (WHS junior)!
The Red Dawgs will hold practice from 1:00-3:15 p.m. in the WHS gym, before the Warrior JV takes the court against Grand Island Central Catholic. During halftime of this JV game, the Red Dawgs will have a shooting contest for fans.
Then, during halftime of the varsity game, the Red Dawgs will challenge some staff members and students to a game of wheelchair basketball.
Wheelchair basketball is an intense, competitive game following many of the same rules as able-bodied basketball with a few changes. For example, a player must dribble the ball once for every two pushes of their chair. The offensive player has only four seconds in the offensive lane, but if the ball hits the rim the count starts over. Wheelchair basketball is played at several colleges and universities as well as in competitive leagues in many cities across the country.
The Red Dawgs are a member of the National Wheelchair Basketball Association (www.nwba.org), as are most of the youth and adult wheelchair basketball teams in the USA. The 2011/2012 National Champions are currently ranked number two in the country, and will travel to Louisville, KY in April to defend their National title, hoping for a three-peat.
Mark your calendar to come and watch the Nebraska Red Dawgs take down their competition on Saturday!
