Students learn about MyPlate and food groups; Analyze nutrition, sugar and fat levels in various foods

Wahoo High School's Food, Nutrition, and Wellness classes recently welcomed Becky Versch, a University of Nebraska Extension Educator, to the classroom.

Versch's presentation was an introduction to MyPlate, food groups, nutrition, and functions of foods in our diets.

Students also had an opportunity to look at food labels to identify the amount of sugar and fat found in various foods and beverages. Sugar cubes were used to visually illustrate the amounts of sugar in beverages such as pop and energy drinks. Some students also measured butter to illustrate levels of fat found in some of their favorite fast food items.
