Anatomy Students Scheduled for Live Open Heart Surgery Videoconference
Class Will Connect with Chicago Hospital for Interactive Experience (Apr. 4)
When studying human anatomy, sometimes it's best to go beyond a picture in a textbook.
Students in Mr. Shannon’s Anatomy classes will have the opportunity of a lifetime on Wednesday, April 4 to watch and interact during a LIVE open-heart surgery, performed at the Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, Illinois.
The Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago offers a select number of students each year the opportunity to view a live, open-heart surgery and interact with the surgeons and medical staff that are performing the life-saving procedures. Each year, teachers may apply to the program with only a select few being chosen to participate each year. Students will view the live surgery using IP videoconferencing technology.
The program, called Live...from the Heart, isn't just a chance for students to see live surgery.
It's an opportunity to explore the human heart in all its wonder. Students will be able to ask the surgical team questions about all things heart-related. Live...from the Heart is also a rare glimpse into the world of health professionals, offering an unparalleled career exploration experience.
How does the Live...from the Heart program work?
Each week, the museum offers this program simultaneously to one on-site class (at the Museum) and two classrooms around the country with videoconferencing capabilities. The three classrooms participate in exactly the same program at exactly the same time. Each class will be able to talk to and see the surgical team (as well as each other).
A few weeks before our scheduled program date, the museum will send Shannon a kit of curriculum materials for use in his classroom. The kit will include several classroom activities for use before and after the videoconference, ancillary materials and reproducible student activity sheets. In addition, it will include Investigation Journals for each student to use during the videoconference.
Students will watch a 5-minute video introducing the surgical team and demonstrating how the patient and the operating room are prepared for surgery. At 9:15 a.m., students connect to Advocate Christ Medical Center to watch the surgery. During the surgery, students will use their Investigation Journals to record questions and participate in activities. Later, they can use the post-visit lesson plans to round out the experience.
