WMS Pulls Together for a Great Opening Day!

Students Off and Running Toward Achieving District's 90% Reading Proficiency Goal

Wahoo Middle School students opened the 2012-2013 school year on a positive note on Wednesday, August 15.

After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, 8th grade student Carissa Koranda sang the National Anthem before the entire student assembly. WMS Principal John Harris stressed that trust, respect and having fun after working hard were going to be three "rules of the road" that would help the students reach their personal and school goals this year.

After the assembly, grade level teams broke into various activities that supported the school's new mission statement: "Inspiring Our Students To Thrive." Harris later shared with students the school's new state reading and math goals for 2013, and reminded them that all students would need to work together in order for the school to achieve success.

To illustrate the importance of teamwork in achieving such lofty goals, students banded together in teams to pull a pickup. Each team pulled the truck 90 feet, symbolizing the 90% reading proficiency goal that the school is striving to achieve this year.
