Caleb Groff takes 1st place @ 2016 UNO Chess Meet!
Jack Maass finishes 3rd
WHS sophomore Caleb Groff went undefeated on Saturday to best 25 other opponents in the 800 and Under Category at the UNO Chess Meet.
WHS junior Jack Maass also had a big day for the Wahoo High School Chess Club, finishing in third place.
“Caleb won some tough matches, and his USCF rating should make a big leap after winning this tournament,” Wahoo Chess Sponsor Larry Fangman said. “Jack went 4 and 1, so he should also see a nice jump in his rating.”
Fangman added, “Each round the winners play a tougher opponent, so by the last two rounds, Caleb and Jack had some tough matches.”
Wahoo took eight players to the tournament. The Wahoo Chess Club is next in action on Saturday, January 30, when the Wahoo members in grades 3-12 compete in the North American Martyrs Scholastic Meet in Lincoln.
