Benji Nelson's slam dunks spur poetic inspiration

Wahoo 4th grader gifted autographed basketball after composing a poem sparked by her favorite Warrior on the court

Wahoo Elementary 4th grader Amelia Gigstad likes to write poetry, play basketball, and watch Wahoo Warrior Basketball games.

Her favorite player is Benji Nelson because she likes to watch him slam dunk the ball. In Mrs Pearson's 4th grade class, Amelia wrote a poem about attending basketball games. In the poem, she referenced Benji and his high-flying slam dunking ways, so WHS English Teacher Larry Fangman invited Amelia to the high school to read her poem to Benji.

Mr. Fangman also purchased a basketball and WHS Peyton Lewis wrote Amellia's poem on the ball, and made a drawing on the ball of Benji slamming home a dunk. Benji autographed the basketball with a personal inscription to Amelia that thanked her for her support.

The attached video shows Amelia reading her poem and being presented with the ball.
