Warriors Storm Past Wayne

Wayne’s dance team was unable to perform at halftime of Friday night’s game against Wahoo High, but the Warriors took the Blue Devils out of their rhythm much earlier than that.
Wahoo used a 19-4 second-quarter run to defeat the Blue Devils 54-37 in the C1-2 district championship game at the Midland Lutheran College Event Center.
"Our team is great on defense," said Wahoo junior center Emily Brodahl. "We kicked it in there in the second quarter and went for it. It was great."
Wayne hit only 3 of 13 shots in the first quarter, but the game was tied at 8 late in the period. Wahoo junior Mattie Murren, who led all scorers with 19 points, hit a 3-point basket to give her team an 11-8 lead after eight minutes.
Wayne pulled to within 13-10 on a Katie Hoskins basket with 5:31 left in the half, but Wahoo responded with a 14-2 run.
Murren had seven points during the surge while sophomore Sadie Murren added four as the Blue Devils struggled with Wahoo’s transition game.
"Wayne played us aggressive and came after us," Wahoo coach Linda Walker said. "They were tight on us defensively so we needed to do some things differently. Once I got the girls to respond to what we do best, then we kind of got some breathing room."
Sadie Murren’s 15-foot jumper at the second-quarter buzzer gave the Warriors a 32-18 advantage at the break. Things didn’t get better for the Blue Devils at halftime as a CD mixup caused their dance team to miss their performance.
Mattie Murren scored off a drive and added three free throws to help Wahoo extend the lead to 41-25 with 1:35 remaining in the third quarter.
Wayne scored the next six points to pull within 41-31. The Blue Devils also had two chances to cut it to eight, but a missed shot and a turnover preserved the double-digit deficit. Brodahl then scored seven points during a Wahoo 9-2 run that ended any of Wayne’s comeback hopes.
Walker said she wasn’t concerned about any letdown by the Warriors after an overtime win over top-ranked Wahoo Neumann in the subdistrict championship game Feb. 19 at Omaha Westside.
"Wayne is a very good team and we knew we’d have to play a solid game against them," she said. "It was a very long week after playing last Friday with such hype. The girls, though, stayed focus during the whole week of practice. We were ready to play this game much earlier than tonight."
The win advances Wahoo, 19-4, to next week’s state tournament. Wayne ends its season at 13-10.
"This is so awesome," Brodahl said. "After picking up that win last week, we were ready to go. I think we can do well at state, at least I’m hoping so."
Sadie Murren had 14 points and Brodahl had 10. Caitlin Fehringer led Wayne with 12 points and Hoskins added 10 points and 11 rebounds.

“It’s always tough to play a team twice that you beat by a huge margin. This time it was on our court. I told the girls to play our game and respect our opponents, and I believe we as team did that,” Head Coach Linda Walker commented.
The Warriors had another big first half, not allowing the Falcons to score until the second quarter. Wahoo rolled to a 41-10 lead after two quarters.
Eleven girls entered the game before half and the tempo of the game continued to be strong. The third quarter was a little slow, but the Warriors dominated the fourth quarter again, outscoring the Falcons 27-7.
Fourteen girls gained experience. Mattie Murren had quite a ‘hot’ 3 point shooting game. She shot 7 of 10 three pointers and ended the game with a career high so far of 25 points.
Scoring was led by Mattie Murren-25, Erin Walker dominated the boards-12, Sadie Murren dished out 9 assists, and Kayla Bennett and Morgan Hancock shared the steal category with 5 each.

D.C. West 34
The Warriors took a huge lead in the first quarter against DC West, 32-3.
Wahoo's relentless defense kept DC West to just 6 points. The Warriors entered half time up 51-6.
Changing strategy allowed many Warriors to see floor time; however, DC West found some opportunities to connect on points, making the second half more of a challenge.
“A huge 1st half sometimes changes the style you choose to play the second half, and it gives your opponents some different looks and opportunities,” Head Coach Linda Walker said. Wahoo landed the win over DC West 85-34.
Scoring was led by Murren sisters-17 each. Morgan Hancock led in rebounding-7, Sadie Murren poured out 9 assists and Mattie Murren led in steals with 4.

The Warriors were ready for the 6-2 Rockets. Wahoo jumped to a 17-7 lead after the first quarter and ended the half 33-21.
“I was not satisfied with our defensive efforts at half time. We kept backing off of the Rockets and allowed them too many opportunities,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker.
The girls responded the second half with an impressive 3rd quarter, out-playing the Rockets 21-8.
“It’s nice to visibly see our chemistry and depth getting stronger,” Walker added. The Warriors rocked to a 67-46 victory over Syracuse.
Scoring was led by Mattie Murren-17, Morgan Hancock powered in rebounds-10, assists-6 and steals-4.

It’s always tough playing on the Monarch court, but the Warriors put forth the effort needed to capture the win.
Warriors were down 17-22 at half time. Mercy’s switching defensive strategy was causing a few issues for the Warriors.
“We made a few adjustments at half time and refocused our energy,” Head Coach Linda Walker said.
The Warriors exploded in the 3rd quarter with a 14-0 run on the Monarchs, outscoring the Monarchs 17-5. Warriors led the rest of the way, but it was not an easy road to victory. The Warriors took the win 53-43.
Scoring was led by Sadie Murren-15. Congratulations to Morgan Hancock, who powered in 15 rebounds, setting a new school record! Erin Walker led in steals-5 and Sadie Murren and Morgan Hancock share the assists at 4 each.

No more snow! Finally the Warriors take the floor once again. The Warriors plowed through the storm against North Bend Tigers.
This was a good game for the fans because the Tigers just kept their paws close by. The Warriors took the lead in the second quarter and led by 6 entering the locker room. Third quarter still stayed tight, but finally the Warriors wore the Tigers out and caused them to turn the ball over several times in the fourth quarter, and the Warriors outscored North Bend 18-12.
"Our extra conditioning in practice and focus is starting to pay off down the stretch," Head Coach Linda Walker said. Warriors take the Tigers 57-47.
Scoring was led by Mattie Murren-20, rebounding by Morgan Hancock-9, steals by Emily Brodahl-5, and assists by Sadie Murren-5

After watching Neb. City the night before, I knew what challenge we would face in the consolation game, and that a lot of girls would be seeing quite a bit of playing time.
The Warriors jumped to a huge lead right away and lead at half time 47-9. We focused on some new things we have been experimenting with in practice during the 3rd and 4th periods.
“It was hard to hold down the reigns on the girls, but I felt we respected their team’s ability by making sure everything came from a half court situation,” commented Head Coach Linda Walker. The Warriors defeated Neb. City 84-13.

Lincoln Christian 48
We knew Christian would be a match up for us coming in. Both teams were battling tough early on until the Warriors went on a bitter cold shooting streak for 3 quarters.
Christian’s Dority posed us some trouble. We didn’t hold her down from dominating the boards and scoring, and they captured transition points to take and keep a ten-point lead throughout the majority of the game.
The Warriors found it again in the fourth quarter and put Christian back on their heels, but time posed a factor.
“We gave a tremendous effort the 4th quarter and our hopes were high in the last few seconds of the game. We learned that we must find a way to win no matter how poorly you shoot the ball. I would love to have this game all over again.” Head Coach Linda Walker said.
Christian defeated the Warriors 48-44.

Girls Basketball Team Suffers Defeat at Hands of #2 Seward
1-1 Warriors Face Treynor, IA in 12/12 Rescheduled Home Match-Up
(December 5, 2009 at Seward)
Wahoo 57
Seward 83
The Warriors took on the #2 team in the State, the Seward Bluejays, on their home court Saturday afternoon, Dec. 5.
A fast-paced game was set by both teams early on, but tremendous outside shooting by the Jays cast a bitter first quarter showing for the Warriors. Four Seward perimeter players hit threes, shooting 6/7 in the first quarter, while others contributed to the devastating score of 27-12 ending the quarter.
The Warriors changed defensive strategy the second quarter and attacked the Jays, forcing Seward back on their heels and into some major foul trouble. Morgan Hancock, Emily Brodahl and Katelyn O'Brien played tremendous post defense while the guards, Mattie and Sadie Murren, Erin Walker and Kayla Bennett pressured and played good help and recovery.
The Warriors attacked and found the free throw line to be a familiar place, sinking 17 of 22. The Warriors were tough to stop, and rallied to tie the game 35-35 within a minute to go in the first half. Seward scored five more points before half was over.
Seward started the second half strong, and went on a 14-2 run in the first eight possessions. We missed some ducks during this run and failed to stop their shooters, and the Jays’ pure shooting continued to exist. The Warriors’ fuel began to run low at this time, which led to some turnovers, but the Warriors never stop fighting. The third quarter was too much to come back from, and the Bluejays had the game at hand.
"I have a lot of respect for Coach Tvrdy's team. They have height, quickness, and skill. It's hard to stop the inside and outside game, but I feel we gave them a real challenge, even though the score doesn't appear [that way]. I was extremely proud of my girls and their efforts. Playing two very good teams in our opening weekend gives me an awesome outlook on our season, the character of my players, and the focus that is needed to compete at a high level," commented Head Coach Linda Walker.
Scoring: E. Walker-14, M. Hancock-11, S. Murren-10, M. Murren-9, E. Brodahl-6, K. O'Brien-5, K. Bennett-2

Bennington 50
Our game opener with last season C-1 State Runner Up Bennington was an opportunity for us to see if our hard work in practice holds some merit.
Emily Brodahl was ready to show her ups on the jump ball, but a poor toss gave Bennington the advantage on the first possession. Erin Walker began the offensive run by hitting a baseline shot. The Warriors jumped quickly into their denying pressure defense, forcing Bennington to turn the ball over.
Mattie and Sadie Murren took the scoring into their hands with the help of free throws from Brodahl and Kayla Bennett, ending the quarter 22-11.
The second quarter dragged for the Warriors, but Brodahl, Katelyn O'Brien, Walker and Sadie Murren gave the Warriors the scores needed to ride the tide. The Warriors were plagued with fouls and turnovers as the Badgers held the Warriors to 7 points, slowing down the momentum. The Badgers connected on their shots and outscored the Warriors 13-7.
Wahoo came out of the locker room ready for more basketball in the second half. The third quarter began with point guard Sadie Murren assisting her teammates to 9 quick points to set an early pace; however, the Badgers kept badgering to make things interesting until the final minutes.
Great team defense and offensive boards by Morgan Hancock, Brodahl and O'Brien continued the Warriors to outscore Bennington 15-11 ending the third quarter. Warriors controlled the fourth quarter and lead the entire game, defeating the Badgers 57-50.
Scoring: S. Murren-20, M. Murren-13, E. Walker-8, E. Brodahl-8, K. Bennett-4, K. O'Brien-4
