Tomjack cards team low score at season-ending district tourney

District C-1 Golf Tournament (October 7-8, 2013 @ Miracle Hills Omaha)

The Warriors finished off their season on Tuesday at the District C-1 Golf Tournament played at Miracle Hills Golf Course in Omaha. The girls battled windy conditions with gusts near 30 mph.

Junior Kristen Tomjack led the way carding a 118. One shot behind was fellow junior Shauna Fiala. Freshman Hannah Polacek had another great day on the links in just her first year of golf shooting a 127. Sophomores Emily Colgan (129) and Alexis Vrana (135) rounded out the team scoring for the Warriors.

“We didn’t finish the season the way we had hoped to with no one qualifying for state; however, the girls made a ton of improvement over the course of the season. In golf some days you have your A game and some days it feels like nothing is working for you. I appreciate all the hard work the girls put in during the season. I also want to thank the teachers for working with the girls to make up assignments that they missed due to meets,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “I would also like to thank Hilltop Country Club and Wahoo Parks and Recreation for allowing us to use their facilities this year.”

Fiala/Tomjack place at Elmwood-Murdock Invite
Elmwood-Murdock Invitational (Monday, September 30, 2013)

The Warriors capped off a busy 15-day stretch Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational.

The Warriors had a good day on the links, finishing with a team score of 411 on the par 30 course.

Shauna Fiala once again led the way for the Warriors with a 90. Her score was good for a tie for 5th place, but finished in 6th based on the scorecard playoff. Kristen Tomjack continued her steady play with a 101. Her score was good for 13th place. Hannah Polacek (108) and Emily Colgan (112) rounded out the scores for the Warriors.

“All four girls posted good scores today. That being said, all four could have gone lower very easily. The girls really struggled with chipping and putting today. The girls have played 99 holes of competitive golf over the last couple weeks, which is a lot of golf. Playing on six different courses during that stretch has allowed the girls to see a lot of different greens and forced them to make adjustments for each course. This will really help us come postseason time,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will be off until districts on Tuesday, October 8. Districts will be played at Miracle Hills Golf Club in Omaha.

Tomjack/Polacek post season-low 9's at Brownell Quad
Omaha Brownell-Talbot Quadrangular (Friday, October 27, 2013)

The Warriors returned to action on Friday at the O-B-T quadrangular played at Miracle Hills Golf Course in Omaha.

The Warriors had a good day on the links finishing with a team score of 459.

Junior Shauna Fiala led the way carding a 108. Fellow junior Kristen Tomjack shot a 53 on the back to finish with a 114. Emily Colgan was just two shots back finishing with a 116. Hannah Polacek rounded out the team scoring by posting another career low score of 57 on the back to finish at 121.

“Today was a great chance to see the course that we will play for districts in a competitive event. I was really pleased with how the girls played. Kristen’s 53 and Hannah’s 57 were both season low 9’s for the girls. The girls will really benefit from playing the course to get a better idea of the layout for districts,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action on Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational before getting some time off before districts.

Fremont JV Dual (Thursday, October 26, 2013)

The Wahoo girls golf team returned to action on Thursday in a dual against Fremont JV at Hilltop Country Club.

The Warriors were just edged out by the Tigers by three shots in the team matchup. Both teams battled windy conditions that made a tough course that much more difficult. Even though the conditions were challenging, Hilltop Country Club was in immaculate shape.

Freshman Hannah Polacek was the top scorer for the Warriors. Polacek, who is in her first year of playing golf, shot a career best score of a 60. Fellow freshman Lucy Welsh also shot a career best 71 on the challenging course. Sophomores Emily Colgan and Alexis Vrana both carded 63 to round out the team scoring for the Warriors.

“It was awesome to see both Hannah and Lucy shoot career best rounds,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The amount of progress that both of those girls have made is incredible. It really shows all the hard work that they have put in so far this year.”

Arlington Invitational (Tuesday, September 24,2013)

The Warriors returned to action Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational, played at Fremont Golf Club.

The girls took on the challenging course in temperatures in the upper 60’s with winds blowing out of the north at 15-20 mph. The Warriors had a great day placing three girls in the top 15 individually, while finishing in 3rd place in the team competition.

Shauna Fiala continued her stellar play by placing 2nd with a 102. Fiala had five pars on the day, including on the challenging 9th hole.

Kristen Tomjack finished in 9th place with a 121. Tomjack had two pars during her round.

Finishing close behind Tomjack was Emily Colgan. Colgan carded a 123, which was good for 11th place.

Rounding out the team scoring for the Warriors were freshmen Hannah Polacek (140) and Lucy Welsh (173).

“Shauna had a good day finishing as the runner up. Kristen was able to cut off 13 shots from her score the previous year. Emily had a great front nine shooting in the fifties on a challenging course,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The girls will be back in action on Thursday in a dual with Fremont JV, played at Hilltop Country Club.

Crete Invitational (Friday, September 2, 2013)

The Wahoo Warriors girls golf team hit the half way point of their busy two-week stretch on Friday at the Crete Invitation. The girls had beautiful weather conditions to play in with temperatures in the low 70’s.

Shauna Fiala continued her great play by placing 8th with a 97. Fiala shot a 51 on the front side and then cut off 5 shots on the back nine.

Kristen Tomjack carded a 125 and Alexis Vrana added a 133.

“College Heights really challenges the girls around the greens. The greens tend to be quick and around the edges putts will roll off,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “That being said the girls were able to make adjustments after their front nines and were able to reduce their putts on the back.”

The Warriors will be back in action on Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational.

Blair Invitational (Monday, September 16, 2013)

The Warrior Girls Golf team returned to action on Monday at the Blair Invitational. The girls enjoyed an amazing day with temperatures in the high 60’s with light winds.

Leading the way again was junior Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished with a 99, which was good for 12th place.

Sophomore Alexis Vrana had the next best score for the Warriors with a 116. Junior Kristen Tomjack was right behind her with a 118. Fellow sophomore Emily Colgan added 123 for a team score of 456. Freshman Hannah Polacek added a 136 for the Warriors.

“Shauna had a good day finishing in 12th place. She cut 14 shots off her score from last year. Alexis and Kristen each cut seven shots off their scores from the previous year as well,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action Thursday in a dual at Plattsmouth. The next day they will participate in the Crete Invitational.

Plattsmouth Invitational (Thursday, September 12, 2013)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team finally got a break from the heat Thursday at the Plattsmouth Invitational.

Junior Shauna Fiala had her round get off to a slow start, but still just missed out on placing while carding a 109.

Fellow junior Kristen Tomjack added a 121 for the Warriors. Sophomores Emily Colgan (129) and Alexis Vrana (133) cut a combined 23 shots off their scores from last year. Freshman Hannah Polacek added a 145 to round out the scoring.

“Shauna just missed placing by 1 shot. Overall the girls did a nice job of handling a challenging course. The winning score was only a 94 which goes to show how challenging it played,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular (Thursday, September 5, 2013)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team hit the links on Thursday at the E-M quadrangular played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.

The Warriors took home the team title by a shot over Arlington!

Taking home the medalist honors by 12 shots was junior Shauna Fiala. Fiala fired a 38 on the par 30 golf course. Her round finished on a high note when she chipped in for birdie from about 20 yards out.

Finishing in the runner up spot was sophomore Emily Colgan. Colgan continued her solid play by carding a 50.

Junior Kristen Tomjack had the 4th best score on the day finishing with a 54. Freshman Lucy Welsh also competed for the Warriors finishing with a 76.

“I was thrilled to have three girls finish in the top four,” commented Coach Curtis Carlson. “Grandpa’s Woods really tests the girls’ short game and I was really pleased with that aspect of their game today.”

The Warriors will return to action Thursday at the Plattsmouth Invitational.

Seward Invitational (Friday, August 30, 2013)

The Warrior Girls Golf team returned to action on Friday at the Seward Invitational. Once again the girls were forced to battle sweltering heat with temperatures in the high 90’s.

Leading the way was sophomore Alexis Vrana. Vrana finished in a tie for 14th place, but lost a scorecard playoff and finished in 16th place. Vrana finished with a 102, highlighted by a birdie on the par 5 8th hole on the back nine.

Also just missing out on medaling was junior Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished with a 104, which was good for 18th place.

Junior Kristen Tomjack (136) and freshman Hannah Polacek (142) also competed for the Warriors.

“I was pleased with how the girls were able to handle extreme conditions and still record solid numbers. Seward always has a very competitive field so it was good to have two girls nearly place,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action Thursday at the Elmwood-Murdock quadrangular.

Beatrice Invitational (Tuesday, Aug. 27, 2013)

The Wahoo Girls Golf team kicked off their year by bringing home a couple medals at the 2013 Beatrice Invitational. The girls had to battle temperatures in the high 90’s along with windy conditions.

Leading the way was junior Shauna Fiala. Fiala finished tied for 10th place with a 111.

Also medaling for the Warriors was sophomore Emily Colgan. Colgan finished in 15th place with a 122.

Also competing were junior Kristen Tomjack and sophomore Alexis Vrana. Tomjack carded a 139, while Vrana finished with a 133.

“The girls were forced to battle the heat and the wind today. Beatrice Country Club is always one of the more challenging courses we play, so when you combine that with the weather conditions it was a tough day. That being said I was pleased with how the girls handled it. To have two girls medal is a great way to start the season,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.

The Warriors will return to action Friday at the Seward Invitational.
