2015 Warrior Girls Golf
Wahoo finishes season 5th of 12 at District; Vrana leads individually with 12th place finish
District Tournament at Quail Run – 10.1.15
The Warriors wrapped up their season Monday at the District Tournament in Columbus. The team had a perfect day to take on the challenging Quail Run Golf Course.
The girls finished in 5th place out of the 12 schools at the tournament. They were just 13 shots back of the 3rd place team.
Individually, senior Alexis Vrana led the way. Vrana came out on fire on the front nine shooting a 51. She followed that up with a 61 on the back for a 112. The 112 put her in 12th place, two shots from qualifying for state. There was a two-way tie for 10th place with a 110.
Five shots behind Vrana was fellow senior Emily Colgan. Colgan shot a 53 on the front and followed it up with a 64 on the back for a 117.
One-shot back was junior Hannah Polacek with a 118. Polacek fired 56 and followed it up with a 62 on the back.
Rounding out the team scoring was junior Hannah Brust with a 130. Brust started on the back with a 69 and was able to bounce back with a 61 on the front.
Also playing for the Warriors was sophomore Maddie Rappl. Rappl also started on the back with a 69 and followed it up with a 64 on the front for a total score of 133.
“It stinks for Alexis that she was so close to qualifying individually. I know that there were a couple places that she could have easily cut those two shots off,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Emily also played really well today except for three bad holes. If you get rid of those three holes she would have been right there in contention for qualifying. The team will really miss Alexis and Emily next year. Both girls did an outstanding job of leading the way this year and have been a joy to coach the last four years.”
Wahoo Triangular Pink Out Event – 10.1.15
After a busy regular season the Warriors wrapped things up with a triangular with conference foes Arlington and Platteview.
The event was played at Hilltop Country Club. The girls had a beautiful day with temperatures in the mid 60’s.
The Warriors finished in second place with a team score of 233. Arlington took home the win with a 229.
Leading the way for the Warriors was senior Alexis Vrana. Vrana struggled off the tee, but still managed to shoot a 54. Her 54 was good for 2nd place.
Fellow senior Emily Colgan used a par on the first hole to shoot a 58.
Two shots behind Colgan was junior Hannah Brust. Brust finished the day with a 60.
Following right behind Brust was sophomore Maddie Rappl. Rappl’s round of 61 was highlighted by a par on the challenging 4th hole.
Also playing for the Warriors was junior Hannah Polacek (63) and freshman Anna Dobesh (64).
“All the girls did some things really well, but had other areas of their game that they struggled with. If Alexis would have hit her tee shots better and Emily chipped better, both girls could have shot really good scores. Both girls are very close to getting everything to come together,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “I also want to thank Saunders Medical Center for sponsoring the Pink Out Event. The girls were really excited about it since it was the first time that we have been able to host an event.”
The next event will be the district tournament at Quail Run Golf Course in Columbus on Monday. The start time for the event will be 9:30.
Elmwood-Murdock Invitational – 9.28.15
After taking the weekend off, the Warriors were back in action Monday at the Elmwood-Murdock Invitational.
It was an up and down day for the girls, as almost all had one nine considerably better than the other.
Leading the way individually was Hannah Polacek. Polacek bounced with a 44 after a rocky first nine to shoot a 97.
Four shots behind Polacek was Hannah Brust. Brust came out hot with a 47 on the first nine.
Also playing for the Warriors was Alexis Vrana (107), Anna Dobesh (121), and Shelby Griego (130).
“It was definitely a roller coaster ride on the course today. At times the girls did some great things, but also found trouble. Grandpa’s Woods can be challenging with its small greens,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The Warriors will wrap up their regular season playing in a triangle with Arlington and Platteview on Thursday. This will be a Pink-Out event.
Arlington Invitational – 9.22.15
The Warriors were back in action Tuesday at the Arlington Invitational. The tournament was played at the challenging Fremont Country Club.
Highlighted by a couple season-best performances, the Warriors finished as the runner-up as a team!
Leading the way individually was senior Emily Colgan. Colgan finished as the runner-up, shooting a season-best 107.
One shot behind Colgan was fellow senior Alexis Vrana. Vrana’s 108 was good for 3rd place.
Also medaling for the Warriors was Junior Hannah Polacek. Polacek shot a 121, which was good for 11th place.
Also playing were Maddie Rappl and Hannah Brust. Both girls finished the day with a 138.
Competing in the 2015 Arlington Invite were, from left: Hannah Polacek, Emily Colgan, Hannah Polacek, Alexis Vrana & Maddie Rappl.
“It was good to see both Emily and Alexis shoot season-best scores on one of the hardest courses that we will play all season,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The key for both girls was putting. Both girls finished with less than 36 putts, which is always the goal. Emily was able to take advantage of the par 5’s on the back by shooting par on a couple of them.”
Crete Invitational – 9.18.15
After focusing on their swings during the midweek, the girls were back in action Friday at the Crete Invitational. The girls were forced to play through on and off rain during the tournament played at College Heights Golf Club.
Leading the way was junior Hannah Polacek. Polacek started her day off with a 52, highlighted by shooting pars on the par 4 5th hole and the par 4 9th hole. She followed up her 52 with a 59 to finish with a 111.
Three shots behind her was Emily Colgan. Colgan’s day started off with a shaky 59, but she bounced back nicely with a 55 to finish with a 114.
Hannah Brust had the next best score with a 122. Brust’s round was highlighted by a par on the par 4 5th hole.
Five shots behind Brust was Maddie Rappl. Rappl finished with a 127. The high point of her round was a par on the par 4 1st hole.
Rounding out the scoring for the Warriors was freshman Anna Dobesh. Dobesh, playing the first 18 holes of her career, shot a 130. On the back 9 she carded a 59. On the back she had pars on both the very challenging par 3’s, and added 3 other bogeys.
“The girls did a great job of handling the challenging conditions. Hannah Polacek had a great first nine with a 52. The difference between the front and the back was putting. If Emily can eliminate some of her putts she would have been very close to placing,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Hannah Brust’s swing has really come a long way in the last week. The key now is to continue to improve on and around the greens. Maddie had some great shots today, but just needs to work on eliminating the bad swings. The surprise of the day for me was Anna. Shooting a 59 on the back with a couple pars on the par 3 is very impressive. She was the only girl in the field to par them both. That is awesome for someone who started swinging a club in July.”
Blair Invitational - 9.14.15
The Warriors were back in action Monday at the Blair Invitational, played at River Wild Golf Course.
Seniors Emily Colgan and Alexis Vrana led the way with both shooting 112. Both girls shot a 54 on the front and a 58 on the back.
Next up for the Warriors were Hannah Polacek and Maddie Rappl. Each shot a 121.
One shot behind them was Hannah Brust with a 122.
“You could tell the girls were dragging a bit from a busy Homecoming weekend. They hit some good shots, but overall it wasn’t their best ball striking day,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
The girls will be back at it Friday at the Crete Invitational played at College Heights Golf Club.
Plattsmouth Invitational - 9.10.15
Two days after playing at Bay Hills, the girls were right back in action there, playing in the Plattsmouth Invitational.
Once again leading the way for the Warriors was Alexis Vrana. Vrana finished in a tie for 13th place with a 109. She lost the scorecard playoff and ended up in 15th place.
Just like Tuesday, Emily Colgan and Hannah Polacek had the next best scores with a couple 118’s.
Rounding out the scoring for the team was Hannah Brust with a 124. Maddie Rappl was right behind her with a 128.
“Alexis hit the ball well today. It is always great to have a girl place in a field that had 15 schools,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “The girls really struggled today on the greens. All the girls finished with at least 46 putts on the day, so they easily can cut a lot of shots off their scores if they can clean that up.”
The girls will be back at it Monday at the Blair Invitational played at River Wilds Golf Course.
Plattsmouth Triangular – 9.8.15
The girls kicked off this week at Bay Hills Golf Course. The team took on Plattsmouth and Blair on a beautiful day.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Alexis Vrana. Vrana ended up with a 54 after a rocky start.
Behind Vrana were Emily Colgan and Hannah Polacek. Both girls shot a 59.
Also playing for the Warriors were Maddie Rappl (63) and Hannah Brust (65).
Blair took home the team title with a 219. The Warriors shot a 235, which was four shots behind the host Plattsmouth.
“It was good to see the course before the Plattsmouth Invite on Thursday. All the elevation changes and uneven lies cause Bay Hills to be a challenge. All the girls had some good holes and some holes they would like back,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular – 9.3.15
The Warriors were back in action Thursday at the Elmwood-Murdock Quadrangular at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.
Taking home the medalist honor was junior Hannah Polacek. Polacek fired a 44 on the par 30 course.
Following closely behind Polacek was Alexis Vrana with a 49.
Rounding out the team scoring were Hannah Brust and Maddie Rappl. Brust shot a 52 and Rappl followed closely behind with a 56.
Also playing for the Warriors were Shelby Griego (61), Payton Carstens (63), and Anna Dobesh (70).
Arlington took home the team title with a 195. The Warriors were six shots back.
“Hannah Polacek had a great day today,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “Even though it is a short course, it is a tough course to shoot a low number. Hannah Brust also had one of her best days on the course hitting the ball really well.”
The girls are back in action on Tuesday at Bay Hills Golf Club. They will be participating in a triangle with Plattsmouth and Blair.
Fremont JV Dual – 8.31.15
After taking the weekend off, the Warriors were back in action Monday, taking on Fremont in a JV dual. The dual was played at Hilltop Country Club in Wahoo.
Leading the way for Wahoo was Payton Carstens. Carstens, who is in her first year of playing golf, carded a 66 on the challenging course.
Right behind Carstens were Hannah Brust and Maddie Rappl. Both girls shot 70’s. Rounding out the scoring for the team was Anna Dobesh (76) and Shelby Griego (77).
Fremont won the dual by a score of 251 to 282.
“All the girls who played for us today are in their first year of golf,” said Coach Curtis Carlson. “There were some really good shots hit for girls in that situation. There were also some things we have to get better at that will come with playing more. Payton hit some really good shots after a slow start.”
The girls are back in action on Thursday at the Elmwood Murdock Quad, played at Grandpa’s Woods Golf Course.
Seward Invitational – 8.28.15
The Wahoo Girls Golf team finished off their busy first week of competition at the Seward Invitational on Friday.
Leading the way for the Warriors was Alexis Vrana. Vrana carded back-to-back 54’s to shoot a 108.
Behind Vrana were Emily Colgan and Hannah Polacek. Colgan shot a 117 and Polacek a 118.
Also playing for the Warriors were Maddie Rappl (125) and Hannah Brust (144). Rappl had her first competitive round in the 50’s on the back.
As a team the girls shot a 468, which was good for 11th place out of 13 teams.
“Alexis had a good day today shooting back-to-back 54’s. Emily, Hannah, and Maddie also had nine’s in the 50’s. The girls really need to continue to improve their consistency. If they can do that, really good things will happen for the team,” said Coach Curtis Carlson.
Beatrice Invitational – 8.25.15
The Warriors were right back in action on Tuesday at the Beatrice Invitational, played at Beatrice Country Club.
Junior Hannah Polacek led the way with a 115. Polacek's first nine was a 55, and she followed that up with a 60. Senior Emily Colgan also played for the Warriors, finishing with a 131.
“Hannah had a great first nine, but then found some trouble on the back," said Coach Curtis Carlson. "Beatrice Country Club is a course that can get you in a lot of trouble quickly if you hit the ball off line. Both girls could have easily cut several strokes by eliminating their penalty strokes.”
The girls are back in action on Friday at the Seward Invitational.
Schuyler Dual – 8.24.15
The Wahoo Girls Golf team kicked off their season Monday by playing a dual with Schuyler. The dual was played at the Schuyler Country Club.
The Warrior team defeated Schuyler 264-279.
Seniors Emily Colgan and Alexis Vrana led the way for the Warriors. Colgan brought home the medalist honors by carding a 59. Vrana was four shots back with a 63.
Rounding out the team scoring was junior Hannah Polacek (70), junior Hannah Brust (72), and sophomore Maddie Rappl (73).
Also playing for the Warriors were freshmen Payton Carstens (71), Anna Dobesh (77), and Shelby Griego (81).
“It was a great experience for the five girls who are new to golf to play a different course and to see what competition is like," said Coach Curtis Carlson. "I thought that Emily Colgan had a good day on a challenging course.”
The team will be back at it tomorrow at the Beatrice Invitational.
