Robotics Opportunities for Wahoo Area Students
Robotics Opportunities for Wahoo Area Students
We have a variety of robotics opportunities for students in the Wahoo area. All robotics groups currently meet at the Open Class Building at the Saunders County Fairgrounds.
Saunders County 4H Robotics and Community Outreach — K -12th grade. Kids build motorized LEGO projects. This is run by parent volunteers. This is the entry point for informal, non-competitive robots for learning! We have several robot platforms such as LEGO and Vex IQ, and spend a few meetings on each. The goal is to have fun, and show kids the additional opportunities that are available. Session 1 club meetings start in November and ends in March. Then things get more competitive in Session 2, in June. Projects are built and entered into Saunders County to be judged. Winners go to Nebraska State Fair in August. Join 4H and build a robot! Registration is easy! https://extension.unl.edu/statewide/saunders/basic/ Contact Rick Stava for more information (prstava@yahoo.com).
VEX IQ Elementary-Middle school —This is the entry point for our competition Robotics program. Wahoo VEX IQ builds robots as a team using plastic parts. It is open to 3rd -8th grades and is a cooperative effort between SCS & WPS. IQ follows the same season and format as older VRC program. Season starts in the fall and state level competition wraps up in March, with Worlds in late April-early May. First year teams meet once a week for about 2 hours. More experienced teams are planning to meet more often. Please contact saunderscountyrobotics@gmail.com or Rick Stava (prstava@yahoo.com) to sign up for VEX IQ now as slots could be full by the time school starts.
Wahoo Robotics VEX VRC Middle School—This is building all metal robots, that requires cutting metal to size, building a bot, programming, engineering notebooks and competitive play against other teams. Teams consist of about 3-4 students working together to compete in a robotics challenge. This is designed for older middle school students and is a cooperative effort between SCS & WPS. Most middle school teams begin to build at the start of the academic year about 4 hours per week and compete in tournaments Oct-March. For more information contact saunderscountyrobotics@gmail.com.
Wahoo Robotics VEX VRC High School—This is building all metal robots, that requires cutting metal to size, building a bot, programming, engineering notebooks and competitive play against other teams. Teams consist of about 3-5 students working together to compete in a robotics challenge. This is designed for HS school students and is a cooperative effort between SCS & WPS. Highly competitive teams may start meeting during the summer. All teams start by early fall. Teams vary in level of competitiveness. Some meet 8-10 hours per week and others average 4 hours per week. Tournaments available Aug-March. For more information contact saunderscountyrobotics@gmail.com as soon as possible to help in getting student on a team with similar competition goals.
Note: All robotics activities have limited resources and may reach capacity limits.
