"I'd like to nominate Mrs. Mary Larsen for teacher of the week," writes Christy Zheng, one of Mrs. Larsen's former students.
Christy Zheng came to America when she was five years old and was enrolled in mrs. Larsen's kindergarten class. Christy said that Mrs. Larsen helped her learn English and was always there when she needed her. "She gave me a ride to the Christmas program and she let me play with the teddy bear because she knew that they are very special in China. Mrs. Larsen also helped me learn the names of the other students in my class."
Christy's siblings also had Mrs. Larsen in kindergarten. Christy said that Mrs. Larsen always makes each student feel special. "She helped me with a lot of other stuff too. I will never forget her."
Mary Larsen has been teaching for 18 years. Prior to teaching kindergarten, Mrs. Larsen was a pre-school teacher. Mary said she became a teacher because she loves kids. "I enjoy watching them succeed."
Mary believes that all children can be successful and it is her job to figure out how to help them succeed. She said it is important to determine what each child can do successfully and build off of that.
Mrs. Larsen uses the High/Scope teaching method in her classes. "High/Scope is an educational approach to teaching and interacting with children in which students learn through active involvement with people, materials, events, and ideas. High/Scope involves active learning, adult-child interaction, a learning environment that enables children to find, use and return materials they need in order to explore, invent, and learn about the world. High/Scope fosters independence, responsibility and confidence in students."
Congratulations Mrs. Mary Larsen, this week's A+ Educator!
