Raymond Central (Home)--January 15, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors had another outstanding game against the Raymond Central Mustangs. The girls had a good start once again to lead for the entire game. The ending score was 63-22 to tack on another win to the Warriors record.
“This was another game that allowed our bench to gain more experience,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Kari Darnell led the team with 17 points, 2 steals, and 2 assists. Kelsey Loos added 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 6 steals. Jordan Hinrichs chipped in with 6 points, 3 assists, and 4 steals. Taylor Kavan put up 9 points, 3 steals, and 2 assists.
Douglas County West (Away)--January 12, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors traveled to DC West to play the Falcons. The Warriors started the game off very strong and never let up. The end score was 64-17. All of the girls got to see quite a bit of playing time in this game.
“We got off to a good start and never looked back. We haven’t had many games like this and it was nice to give more players varsity experience,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Mallory Shanahan led the team with her personal high of 26 points, 15 rebounds and7 steals. Abbey Grandgenett added 8 points, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Kylie Krecklow went 2 for 2 on three points in just 5 minutes to add 6 points to the team’s score. Taylor Kavan also grabbed 8 boards.
Grand Island Northwest (Home)--January 11, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors played Grand Island NW at home on January 11. The Warriors started off slow heading into the locker room only leading by two with the score being 17-15. After half time the quickness on the floor really picked up with the subs getting playing time. The Warriors won the game 48-30.
“Our spark ignited the third quarter when the subs began full court pressing. Steals and finished shots put the momentum into our hands,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Mallory Shanahan led the team with 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 steals. Mattie Murren and Kari Darnell added 8 points apiece. Kelsey Loos chipped in 7 points and 4 steals. Taylor Kavan also put up 6 points and 5 rebounds.
Mercy (Away)--January 8, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors experienced a very tough game against the Class B Omaha Mercy Monarchs. The girls got off to a very tough start with only making 3 for 29 of their shots in the first half. The score going into the locker room at half time was 7-18. The girls came back out and tuned up their game. The Warriors brought the score up to tie at 32, but still weren’t able to pull of the win. The end score was 37-42.
“We closed the gap, but some failed executions halted our comeback,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Mallory Shanahan led the team with 21 points and 9 rebounds. Amber Henkel added 3 points, 4 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3 assists. Abbey Grandgenett chipped in 4 points and 5 rebounds. Taylor Kavan put up 3 points and 4 rebounds. Jordan Hinrichs also added 5 assists.
North Bend (Home)--January 5, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors were prepared to play for their home crowd on January 5 against North Bend. The Warriors pulled through with four solid quarters to capture the win. The Warriors beat the Tigers 51-44.
The Warriors led at the end of the first half 21-16. The Warriors never ended a quarter without being in the lead. It was a battle until the end, but the girls made crucial free throws to secure the win.
“This was a good win against a quality team,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Mallory Shanahan led the team with 14 points. Shanahan also contributed 4 rebounds, 3 steals, and 2 assists. Taylor Kavan added 13 points and 6 rebounds to the game. Abbey Grandgenett chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds. Amber Henkel played very unselfishly with 7 assists, as well as Jordan Hinrichs with 4 assists.
Syracuse (Away)--January 4, 2008
The Wahoo Warriors traveled to Syracuse to match up against a team with a 7-1 record. The Warriors put together a very good game to come out with a 58-46 win.
The Warriors led at the end of every quarter. The bench was able to play the last minutes of the game to finish it off for the first time this season. Everyone was able to see the floor and get some playing time.
Mallory Shanahan led the Warriors with 17, 8 rebounds, and 3 steals. Taylor Kavan contributed with 16 points and 5 rebounds. Abbey Grandgenett added 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 assists. Amber Henkel also chipped in 7 points and 3 steals. Jordan Hinrichs added 4 rebounds and 6 assists. Kelsey Loos helped with the boards, adding 7 rebounds.
“I’m proud of their hustle and execution,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Bishop Neumann (Holiday Tournament @ Neumann HS)--December 29, 2007
The Wahoo Warriors went head to head against rival Bishop Neumann for the Championship round of the Holiday Tournament. It was a close game, but the Warriors couldn’t pull it out. The Warriors lost 47-49.
“This was a very high energy game and I felt we were ready for the challenge and it proved to be true,” said Coach Linda Walker.
The Warriors were down by as much as 14 points at one point in the game, but the girls never gave up. They pulled the score within 9 points at half time and by 5 points going into the fourth quarter.
Mallory Shanahan led the scoring with 20 points. She also added 8 rebounds. Kelsey Loos and Taylor Kavan had 6 points each. Amber Henkel chipped in with 4 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.
Lincoln Christian (Holiday Tournament @ Neumann HS)--December 28, 2007
The Wahoo Warriors traveled across town to Bishop Neumann to match up with Lincoln Christian for the first round of the Holiday Tournament. The Warriors were able to move on to the Championship round with a win of 56-45.
The Warriors had a very strong first half. The teams headed into the locker rooms with Wahoo up 32-17. The Warriors didn’t have such a great third quarter, getting outscored 6-11. The Warriors still pulled out with a good win.
Mallory Shanahan once again led the scoring with 14 points. She also grabbed 13 rebounds. Kari Darnell chipped in with 12 points and 7 steals. Taylor Kavan added 9 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 steals. Abbey Grandgenett, Amber Henkel, and Kelsey Loos each had 5 points, and Erin Walker added another 4.
“We rebounded extremely well and transitioned down the floor with force,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Lincoln Lutheran (Away)--December 18, 2007
The Wahoo Warriors had a tough game on December 18. They were not ready for the challenge of Lincoln Lutheran. They were not able to pull out a win, losing 48-60.
It was a close game throughout the first three quarters. The half-time score was 25-27 with Lincoln Lutheran ahead by one basket. After the third quarter, Lutheran was only ahead by 3. After that Lutheran pulled away from the Warriors for the win.
Amber Henkel led the game with 12 points. She also added 3 assists. Kari Darnell added 10 points and 4 steals. Kelsey Loos chipped in 8 points and 4 rebounds. Abbey Grandgenett had 7 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. Mallory Shanahan added 6 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals.
“We will take this opportunity to challenge ourselves to build a stronger foundation for what lies ahead,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Fort Calhoun (Away)--December 14, 2007
The Wahoo Warriors traveled to Fort Calhoun on December 14. The girls pulled out a very close game by going into overtime to finish it off. The Warriors won 56-50.
The Warriors led for most of the game. Fort Calhoun had very strong post play. Wahoo did a nice job of controlling the inside. The game almost did not go into overtime, but a free throw from Mallory Shanahan tied the game to send the Warriors into overtime.
The rebounding was very strong for the Warriors this game. Shanahan ended with 10 rebounds, Taylor Kavan with 7, Abbey Grandgenett with 6, and Hinrichs and Henkel added 5 each. Shanahan led the scoring with 18 points. Kavan added 12, Darnell scored 8, Grandgenett put up 7, and Henkel chipped in 6.
Conestoga (Home)--December 7, 2007
The Wahoo Warriors Girls Basketball team defeated the Conestoga Cougars 54-41 at home on Friday night.
The Warriors led strong for the first half of the match, heading into half time leading 21-9. The Warriors had the game under control until the fourth quarter when the Cougars gave the Warriors a run for their money.
The Warriors turned the ball over four times in a row and the Cougars capitalized on the opportunities and brought the score within 6 points.
“We finally decided to gain back the momentum with minutes to go,” said Coach Linda Walker.
Junior Warrior Taylor Kavan controlled the boards with 7 rebounds. Mallory Shanahan had a great scoring night with 22 points. Kari Darnell and Kavan each chipped in 11 points. Jordan Hinrichs scored 4 points and Abbey Grandgenett added 6. Amber Henkel contributed to the game with 4 steals and 7 assists.
Seward (Away)--December 3, 2007
The Warriors traveled to Seward to face the Class B number 3 pre-season-ranked team. The Warriors fell to a 1-1 record, losing to the Bluejays 45-52.
The Bluejays had a lot of height, but the Warriors matched up well. Although the score was close throughout the game, the Warriors were never able to grab a hold of the lead.
“We were definitely challenged by Seward’s size, but the girls fought the battle well,” said Coach Linda Walker. “Persistence and determination kept us in the ball game.”
Junior Mallory Shanahan led the team in scoring for the second straight game with 23 points. Shanahan also added 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Jordan Hinrichs scored 10 points and three assists. Darnell chipped in with 7 points. Henkel also added 4 assists and 3 blocked shots.
Bennington (Home)--November 30, 2007
Wahoo started with a 1-0 record by defeating the Bennington Badgers on Friday night. The Warriors pulled through with a 50-44 victory.
The Warriors had plenty of foul trouble throughout the game with Mallory Shanahan benched for half the game with foul trouble early. Shanahan was still able to lead the game with 18 points and 8 rebounds. Shanahan also lead the team with 6 steals.
Jordan Hinrichs scored 9 points, Kari Darnell contributed 8, and Abbey Grandgenett chipped in 3. Grandgenett also had 5 steals and 4 assists. Amber Henkel had a great game with 12 points, 3 rebounds, 4 steals and 2 assists.
“Henkel played a consistent game for us and really sparked in the final minutes with a baseline attack that refueled us to win 50-44,” said Coach Linda Walker.
The Warriors pulled off a tight one for their first win of the season. The girls are looking forward to improve as the season continues.
