“He tells me it’s bad for my heart.”
“Mom, I don’t like when you do that in the house.”
These are just two of the comments Head Start Preschool teachers have heard recently from parents. Why?
This month, January 2008, the Saunders County Head Start Preschool staff is promoting “Care For Their Air”, a program sponsored by the EPA and Head Start to protect our children from the effects of second-hand smoke.
We’re encouraging families to take the pledge, not so much to quit smoking, but to quit smoking around your child! Second-hand smoke can cause serious health problems, according to the “Protect Your Children” pamphlet from the EPA.
The pledge is simple to make, and according to one parent we recently visited, the child can help keep them to the pledge.
“I know I should quit, and if my daughter knows I’m trying and we have a piece of paper in front of us that says we’re trying to be smoke-free, I think I can do it.”
Care for their Air is free and confidential. Log on to www.epa.gov/smokefree to download a certificate that says you want your home to be smoke free. You can also call 1-866 SMOKE-FREE (1-800-766-5337). Materials available include coasters, window clings, pamphlets, and a picture frame magnet. All materials are also available in Spanish.
You can contact Saunders County Head Start at 443-4250 for more information about this program and other Head Start offerings in Saunders County.
