Distance Learning Courses Posted for Fall 2010 Semester
High School Credit, College Credit, and Dual-Enrollment Credit Courses Offered through other Nebraska High Schools and State/Community Colleges
by David Privett, WHS Distance Learning Coordinator
LATE REGISTRATIONS FOR FALL 2010 DISTANCE LEARNING CLASSES ARE STILL BEING ACCEPTED. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, PLEASE COMPLETE THE REGISTRATION FORM LINKED BELOW AND RETURN TO MR. PRIVETT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. QUESTIONS? CALL 443-4332 EXT. 3232, OR E-MAIL dprivett@esu2.org.
Wahoo High School is now able to offer a variety of courses from a consortium of almost 100 high schools and state/community colleges from across Nebraska. These courses are held in the WHS Distance Learning Classroom, where students are able to interact with the instructors and students at all other schools enrolled in the courses.
Current course offerings for Fall 2010 are listed at the bottom on this page. If you see a course(s) you would like to take next semester, simply click on the distance learning request form at the bottom of this page. Print the form, fill it out, and return it to Mr. Privett or the high school office by April 9, 2010. Printed forms will also be available in the high school office.
Please keep in mind that filling out this form DOES NOT guarantee you a placement in a course; It is simply a request to another school offering a course. Individual schools offering distance learning courses will choose which requesting schools they will accept and which schools they won't (a single course can only be broadcast to a maximum of four sites, which includes the origination site; so if six schools, for example, request a specific course, the school offering the course will choose three). All sites offering distance learning courses will announce acceptance later this fall, at which point we will notify students whether or not they have been accepted.
Unless approved otherwise, students applying to the distance learning program are expected to have an ACT score of 18 or higher, OR a PLAN score of 20 or higher, OR have taken the ASSET test with the minimum score required by the college offering the course(s) of interest. Students are also expected to have demonstrated positive behavior during their high school tenure, and should not have a history of discipline referrals, detentions, etc.
Tuition and fees may apply for these courses. Please pay close attention the type of course being offered. Some courses are for high school credit only, some are for college credit only, and some are offered for dual-enrollment credit (both high school and college). Courses taught by college instructors who do not have high school certification CANNOT be accepted for high school credit. For college credit and dual enrollment courses, be sure to check with your chosen college or university to verify transfer of credit eligibility.
In addition, each course will follow the calendar of the school/college offering the course; thus, it may be necessary at times for a student to attend a distance learning course on a day when Wahoo High School is not in session. Your attendance will be monitored and recorded just like any other high school class, and you are expected to attend all class sessions, unless you have an excused absence (which, with the exception of illness, should be arranged with the instructor in advance).
FINANCIAL AID IS AVAILABLE FOR THESE COURSES. Nebraska's Coordinating Commission for PostSecondary Education offers Access College Early (ACE) Scholarships, which pays tuition and mandatory fees for qualified, low-income high school students to enroll in college courses from Nebraska's colleges or universities. Please CLICK HERE to view the ACE Scholarship Program web site, offering further information and a link to the online ACE Scholarship application. For more information about financial aid, contact WHS Counselor Terry Kopish or WHS Principal Chris Arent. Students who obtain a scholarship for these courses are expected to complete the course with a grade of 'C' or better. Students with scholarships who achieve a grade lower than 'C' will be required to reimburse the original scholarship amount to the district.
If you have any questions regarding the distance learning learning, please contact David Privett at the high school (443-4332 ext. 3232, or e-mail dprivett@esu2.org).
