The WHS National Honor Society (NHS) welcomed eight new members November 6, 2005 with the annual Induction Ceremony. Those joining the ranks of the society were senior Lyndey B. and juniors Molly C., Katie L., Jesse S., Joy N., Kim S., Mickenzie K., and Erica M.
Current members, headed by seniors Tom D. (president), Sarah T. (vice president), Anna H. (secretary), and Gina H. (treasurer), conducted the ceremony. Ms. Terry Kopish, the WHS guidance counselor and NHS sponsor, was also present.
"The parents commented that it was very organized and ran very smoothly, which was a compliment to NHS members," commented Kopish. "We are looking forward to the new members and the talents and leadership they are bringing to NHS, and the positive impact they will have on the school."
NHS eligibility is based on four areas: character, scholarship, leadership and service. To be a part of the society, students must be in their junior or senior year and carry a 3.5 GPA throughout high school. An application that highlights examples of the candidate's character, leadership and service is completed by each of the nominees.
If the application is accepted, the student proceeds to an interview with the NHS faculty advisory council, consisting of WHS teachers, a school board member, and a member of the community. The interview is the final round of the application process.
NHS is involved in various service projects in the community and school throughout the year, such as freshman orientation before the beginning of the school year, and parent-teacher conferences.
