Yutan (7th Grade B and A Team)
The Wahoo 7th grade team played Yutan on December 8 at Wahoo Elementary in a doubleheader. The Wahoo 7th grade B team opened up the day by jumping to a 6-0 lead, lead by Jonathan Hollman and Dylan Jaskulski. The Warriors fought hard throughout the game, but struggled to score in the 2nd quarter, which was the difference in the game. The Wahoo 7th grade B team traded baskets throughout the second half, but were unable to overcome their lack of scoring, falling to the Yutan 7th grade B team 23-27. The Warriors were lead by Derek Hamar and Jonathan Hollman with 6 points, Dylan Jaskulski with 4 points, Jake Wilson with 3 points, and Zack Gropp with 2 points. Dylan Jaskulski lead the Warriors in rebounds with 5 and Derek Hamar lead the Warriors with 3 steals.
The Warriors used their full court pressure in the 7th grade A team game to jump out to a commanding 15-4 lead and never looked back. Wahoo applied more defensive pressure in the half court during the second quarter and held the Chieftans to 4 points, all on free throws to pull to a 25-8 lead. The Warriors continued their strong play in the second half, to finish the game with a 49-19 victory in the A game. The Warriors were lead in scoring by Mitchell Shukis with 21 pts, Jonathan Abbott with 8 points, Dylan Jaskulski, Derek Hamar, and Brook Stuart with 4 points, and Nick Russell, Tyler Kavan, and Jacob Moline with 2 points each. The Warriors were lead by Mitchell Shukis with 5 steals and 6 rebounds.
Ft. Calhoun
The Warriors battled the winter weather to travel north to Ft. Calhoun for a regular season match up against Ft. Calhoun. In the C game, points were scare for both teams with many opportunities missed from the field and the line. Ft. Calhoun lead 4-3 at half-time and took advantage of a few break away layups to secure a 5-14 victory. The Warriors were lead by Alex Talbot and Derek Hamar with 2 points and Kyle Kander with 1 point.
In the B game, the Warriors jumped to a 7-4 lead after one quarter but were held scoreless in the second to fall behind Ft. Calhoun 7-10 at half-time. Ft. Calhoun got off to a quick start in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 17-11. The Warriors mounted a furious comeback but had to settle for free throws in the fourth quarter, outscoring Ft. Calhoun, 14-9, but falling short 31-38. The Warriors were lead in scoring by Jonathan Abbott with 8 points, Mitchell Shukis with 7 pts, Brook Stuart with 6 pts, Tyler Kavan with 4 pts, Jacob Moline and Ben Brabec with 2 pts, and Brock Partridge with 1 point. The defense was lead by Jacob Moline with 5 rebounds and Brook Stuart with 3 steals.
In the A game, the Warriors struggled to find their touch, trailing Ft. Calhoun 7-15 at halftime. The Warriors regrouped at half-time and used full court pressure and solid rebounding to outscore Ft. Calhoun 18-2 in the third quarter. The Warriors played Ft. Calhoun even in the fourth quarter, despite shooting 1-12 from the FT line, to finish with a 32-24 victory. The scoring was lead by Mitch Snyder with 12 pts, Mitchell Shukis with 11 pts, Casey Brown with 4 pts, Max Cook with 3 pts, and Jonathan Abbott and Preston Raymond with 1 point each. Mitch Snyder lead the Warriors with 12 rebounds and Max Cook with 5 steals.
Ft. Calhoun – A Team Tournament
Game 1 – Ft. Calhoun
In a rematch from Monday, the Warriors traveled to Ft. Calhoun to face the home team in the opening round of the tournament. The Warriors played Ft. Calhoun close in the first quarter, with the help of Max Cook’s 3 3pt shots to trail 9-10. Wahoo cranked up their defensive pressure to jump on the Pioneers in the second quarter, 10-3, for a 19-13 half-time lead. Casey Brown and Mitch Snyder gave the one-two punch in the third quarter, extending the lead 33-18. Ft. Calhoun mounted a furious comeback, but the Warriors were able to hold off the Pioneers for a 45-39 victory. Wahoo was lead by Max Cook with 16 pts, Casey Brown and Mitch Snyder with 8 pts each, Brady Darnell with 5 pts, Mitchell Shukis with 4 pts, and Brook Stuart and Ben Brabec with 2 pts each. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Max Cook with 6 steals and Casey Brown with 7 rebounds.
In the finals, the Warriors met an extremely athletic and undefeated Bennington squad. Bennington used a combination of three point shooting and quickness to push to a 28-15 half-time lead. The Warriors outscored the Badgers 25-24 in the second half but could not overcome their first half scoring slump to finish runner up to Bennington 40-52. The Warriors were lead by Mitchell Shukis with 15 pts, Max Cook with 9 pts, Casey Brown with 8 pts, Mitch Snyder with 6 pts, and Jonathan Abbott with 2 pts. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Max Cook with 5 steals and Mitch Snyder with 10 rebounds.
North Bend
The Wahoo MS boys basketball teams traveled to North Bend to take on the Tigers on Thursday, November 29. In the opening game, the B team used a barrage of 3 point shots and free throw shooting, combined with an aggressive full court defense, to jump to a 12-4 lead after one quarter. The Warriors extended their league in the second quarter 21-5, holding the Tigers to one free throw. In the third and fourth quarters, the Warriors continued to outplay the Tigers on both ends of the court, outscoring the Tigers 8-6 and 11-6 in the third and fourth quarters, leading to a 40-17 victory for the Warriors. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Tyler Kavan with 6 rebounds and Johnathan Abbott with 4 steals. The scoring was lead by Brook Stuart with 11 points, Johnathan Abbott with 9 points, Preston Raymond with 5 points, Nick Russell with 4 points, Derek Hamar with 3 points, and Brock Partridge, Jacob Moline, Dylan Jaskulski, and Tyler Kavan with 2 points each.
The A team played even throughout most of the first quarter against the Tigers but gave up a late 3 point shot, to trail the Tigers after one quarter 6-9. The Warriors played solid defense in the second quarter, holding the Tigers to 8 points, but went cold from the field, shooting 2 for 14, and trailed North Bend 10-17. The Warriors were able to find their shooting touch in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 12-11. The Warriors were able to close the gap in the final quarter to 3 points, but ended up trading free throws for three pointers in the final two minutes, to fall to the Tigers 35-45. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Max Cook with 6 steals and 4 assists, and Mitch Snyder with 6 rebounds. On offense, Mitchell Shukis with 10 points, Max Cook with 8 points, and Ben Brabec, Casey Brown, and Brady Darnell with 4 points.
Raymond Central
The Wahoo MS boys basketball teams went two out of three against Raymond Central on Tuesday, November 27. In the opening game, the B team battled through a close first quarter but found it self down 10-12. Raymond Central extended their lead to five at halftime. In the third and fourth quarters, the Warriors played well but were outscored 10-9 in each quarter, leading to a 41-34 victory for Raymond Central. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Johnathan Abbott and Tyler Kavan with 2 steals each and Ben Brabec and Tyler Kavan with 4 rebounds. The scoring was lead by Brook Stuart with 10 points, Johnathan Abbott with 7 points, Tyler Kavan with 5 points, Preston Raymond and Ben Brabec with 4 points, and Brock Partridge and Derek Hamar with 2 points each.
In the second game, the C team, while only playing two quarters, fought through a defensive battle as was able to pull out a 11-9 victory. Although the Warriors missed some scoring in transition, their defensive pressure was able to many scoring opportunities for the Warriors. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Derek Hamar and Alexis Venegas with 2 steals each, Kyle Kander and Alex Bern with 3 rebounds each. The scoring was lead by Derek Hamar with 5 points, Kyle Kander with 4 points, and Alexis Venegas with 2 points.
The A team used its full court press and defensive pressure to jump out to a quick start against Raymond Central, outscoring the Mustangs 18-12. The second quarter saw the Warriors tighten up their half court defense, holding the Mustangs to 4 points for the quarter, with the Warriors extending to an 11 point lead at half. The Warriors were able to controlling the defensive boards and outscored Raymond Central 7-5 and 8-7, in the final two quarters. The Warriors finished with a 44-27 victory over the Mustangs. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Max Cook with 5 steals and 4 assists, and Mitch Snyder did a great job on the offensive and defensive boards, once again reaching double digits with 11 rebounds for the game. On offense, Mitch Snyder, led all scorers with 13 points. Mitchell Shukis had 10 points, Casey Brown and Max Cook with 4 points, Dyllan Kellner, Preston Raymond, Brook Stuart, Brock Partridge, and Ben Brabec with 2 points each, and Johnathan Abbott with 1 point.
Ashland (Season Opener)
The Wahoo Middle School boys basketball teams swept Ashland on their opening night of the 2007 season. In the opening game, the C team fought through a defensive battle and was able to pull out a 12-7 victory. Although the Warriors missed some scoring in transition, their defensive pressure was able to hold Ashland to 3/20 shooting on the night. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Derek Hamar with 5 steals, Kyle Kander with 9 rebounds and 2 blocks. The scoring was lead by Jake Wilson with 5 points, Kyle Kander with 4 points, Ty Kander with 2 points, and Derek Hamar with 1 point.
In the second game, the B team battled through a close first quarter, but was able to build to a 17-12 lead at halftime. In the third quarter, the Warriors were able to turn up their defensive intensity, leading to a 16-1 run for the quarter. The Warriors finished the game with a 35-21 victory over Ashland. Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Brook Stuart and Tyler Kavan with 4 steals each, Preston Raymond with 4 assists, and Ben Brabec with 7 rebounds. The scoring was lead by Brook Stuart with 14 points, Tyler Kavan with 6 points, Ben Brabec with 5 points, Jonathan Abbott with 4 points, and Preston Raymond, Jacob Moline, and Dylan Jaskulski with 2 points each.
The A team got out to a quick start against the taller Ashland team by hitting some 3 point shots early in the first quarter to jump out to a 17-7 lead. The second quarter saw the Warriors give up some transition baskets and rebounding opportunities to Ashland to close the gap to 21-10 at halftime. The Warriors were able to regain their swagger in the second half defensively, controlling the defensive boards and outscoring Ashland 10-2 and 8-1, in the final two quarters. The Warriors were able to secure the victory 39-24 over Ashland.
Defensively, the Warriors were lead by Max Cook with 7 steals and 6 assists, and Mitch Snyder did a great job on the offensive and defensive boards, totaling 10 for the game. On offense, the Warriors were led by Max Cook and Mitchell Shukis with 12 points, Mitch Snyder with 8 points, Casey Brown and Dylan Kellner with 2 points, and Brock Partridge with 1 point.
