On Friday, October 19, the Wahoo XC State Qualifiers traveled west to Kearney to compete in the 2018 Nebraska State Cross Country Championships, held at the Kearney Country Club.

The weather was good with temps in the low 70’s, albeit a breezy day with gusts of wind close to 20+ mph.

Zoe Christenson, the lone qualifier for the Lady Warriors, got the day off to a great start. She finished the 5000 meter course in 21:21 for 18th place, just three spots out of medal contention.

“Zoe ran a great race, today,” commented Head Coach Karla Curran. “She left absolutely everything out on the course, so I cannot be more proud of her performance!”

Next up was the boys’ squad. Grant Crockett led the gentlemen with a time of 18:11.2 for 22nd place. Freshman Josh Graber finished only .6 seconds behind Crockett, in 18.11.8, for 23rd place. Micah Sears crossed the finish line next for Wahoo with a time of 19:02 for 59th place, and Jerstan Zeleny completed the scorers, running 19:23 for 73rd place. Trenton Erdmann-Hughes (85th), and Michael Robinson (95th) also ran for the Warriors. For their efforts, the gentlemen finished in 8th place in the team standings.

“I was pleased with our team finish, in spite of the fact that some of our boys didn’t run their best today," said Coach Curran, “Hopefully, this experience will provide them with a mental boost for next season.”

On Thursday, October 11, the Wahoo Warrior varsity squads traveled to Doane University to compete in the C-3 District XC Championships. The meet was originally scheduled to run at Wildwood Lake south of Valparaiso, but due to poor field conditions, was moved to Crete.

The change didn’t seem to rattle the Wahoo Harriers, as many turned in stellar performances on the day. The girls’ squad began the day, and were again led by Zoe Christenson, who ran a smart race, finishing 4th overall, punching her ticket to the State Meet next Friday, October 19, at Kearney.

“Zoe has been getting better and better with each passing meet,” replied Head Coach Karla Curran, “so her qualifying for the State Meet was really no surprise. I am so proud of her mental toughness and work ethic this season!”

Hannah Jorgenson was next in for the Lady Warriors, running 22:17, for 20th place. Next up was Erin Sutton, with a time of 22:41 for 24th. Completing the scorers was KaDee Johnson, running 24:27 for 43rd. Mara Dobesh (54th), and Abi Klein (55th), also ran for the Warriors.

The gentlemen were up next, and they didn’t disappoint! Grant Crockett was first to cross the finish line for the Warriors, running 18:01.47,  for a 6th place finish. Josh Graber was on Grant’s heels, narrowly missing out on the lean, and running 18:01.68 for 7th place. For their efforts, both Crockett and Graber qualified individually for the State Meet.

Micah Sears was next in for the Warriors, running 19th in 18:37. Jerstan Zeleny (21st) and Trenton Erdmann-Hughes (22nd) ran neck-and-neck the entire race, and were key to the Warriors' third place team finish. Michael Robinson completed the varsity squad running 19:12 for a 35th place finish.

“I can’t say enough about the effort of this boys’ team today,” Curran commented. “With 1000 meters to go, it didn’t look like we were going to make it to State, but the boys really came through and closed hard.”

For their efforts the boys’ team finished third overall, narrowly beating fourth place Minden by three points.

Both Zoe Christenson and the Wahoo boys’ team will compete next Friday at the State XC Championships in Kearney, NE. Christenson will run at 2:00 p.m., and the boys will take the stage at 3:00 p.m.

Both varsity teams competed at the Nebraska Capitol Conference meet held at the Syracuse Country Club. The afternoon was off to a great start when Zoe Christenson led the way for the Lady Warriors. On Wednesday, September 19, the Warrior Cross Country teams traveled to the North Bend Country Club to participate in the annual North Bend Cross Country Invitational. The meet was originally scheduled for Thursday, September 20, but due to the threat of potential storms, was moved to try and beat Mother Nature. The conditions were far from favorable, with temperatures in the mid-90’s, and humidity to match; however, the Wahoo harriers rose to the occasion, and many came away with some impressive performances.

The Lady Warriors were first up, and once again, Zoe Christenson shined. Christenson ran an impressive time of 21:47 on the hot day, garnering a 9th place finish. Next in for the ladies was freshman Hannah Jorgensen, with a time of 23:53, earning a 15th place medal. Senior Erin Sutton was not far behind, placing 16th in 24:09. The girls were led by Zoe Christenson, once again, as Zoe remained consistent, running 22:12, good enough for a 7th place finish. The girls’ squad placed 7th overall.

“We just need to get our girls’ team healthy. If we can do that, I believe we can score pretty well in the weeks ahead. Zoe and Erin are running tough, and leading this team in the right direction,” commented Coach Karla Curran.

The boys' squad ran very well, placing three in the top twenty. Grant Crockett was the first Warrior to cross the finish line, placing 8th in 18:35. I was very pleased with the way many of the kids ran. The gentlemen ran well, placing second, losing to Schuyler on a tie-breaker. Grant Crockett seems to be in great shape, outdistancing his nearest competitor by 8 seconds. Freshman Josh Graber also ran very well, placing third. Micah Sears squeaked into the top 10, with a ninth place finish. We really need Micah to continue closing the gap on Grant and Josh, if we are to be successful at future meets. Our last scorer, Michael Robinson, medaled in 12th place, so I was happy to see him get some hardware. Rounding out our varsity squad were Trenton Erdmann-Hughes and Braedenn Olson. Trenton has improved so much from a year ago. He will definitely continue to vie for a spot on varsity. I am happy to see so many young men fighting for a varsity spot. These boys compete against each other on nearly a daily basis. This competition is what will make us a tougher team by season’s end.

As for the girls' squad, Erin Sutton ran extremely well, placing third overall, and number one on our team. She seems tougher than ever, and willing to step into a lead role on this team. Zoe Christenson placed fourth, right behind Erin, so I am excited to see these two girls lead the way for the rest of the season. Placing second as a team was thrilling, especially when our number four girl, Hannah Jorgensen, had an off day. It will be fun to see how well we can do when the whole girls’ team is at 100%!
