WHS Food & Fitness Students Make Gummy Worms!
UNL Rep Teaches Class about Food Science & Technology Opportunities
Students in the Food and Fitness classes had the opportunity last week to hear from Ryan Kawata, a representative from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Food Science and Technology Department.
Kawata works to educate high school students about opportunities on East campus, and more specifically in the Food Science and Technology Department.
The UNL Food Science department and its students have been responsible for a variety of food products including the McDonalds McRib sandwich, Healthy Choice dinners, and their ever-changing ice cream flavors at the Dairy Store.
“He told us a lot about what they do at UNL Food Science and it was really cool,” said WHS junior Brandon Zetocka.
Kawata finished his presentation with an experiment where the students learned about how different chemicals combine to make unique products; in this case, gummy worms.
“It was really fun because we got to experiment with food products and chemicals,” commented WHS freshman Giselle Hernandez.
